This pedestrian bridge over the A22 is part of the Groen en Waterplan of Noordholland. The bridge, which has a length of 89 meters and a clear span of 45 meters, connects two parking lots just north of the Velsertunnel on both sides of the A22. The prominent cut-out at the bottom of the bridge is the result of functional demands of Rijkswaterstaat concerning the range of space which is necessary for visibility of the signposts along the national highway. The result is a bridge where you cross at a height of 7-10 meters above the asphalt. The design consists of two constructive steel plates with in between a narrow path of 2.5 meters. Once at the top, the visitor is rewarded with a clear view over the surrounding industrial landscape and the Noordzeekanaal. The remarkable and bold simplicity of the bridge marks the Wijkeroogplantsoen, Velsen Noord, the Groen en Waterplan and turns the encounter between road and path into a sensational event.
