The Banpo Dong project is located along the Han River in one of the most desired districts of Seoul. A densely built plot will contain six iconic residential towers with high-end apartments designed by UNStudio. The challenge of the landscape design was to create a high quality public space which would allow inhabitants to escape from the busy city life. The feeling of seclusion is achieved by creating a green oasis with a sunken secret garden. The sunken secret garden located in the middle of the plot lays six meters below ground level. The symbolic atmosphere of the garden is created by two contrasting landscapes touching each other: a water mirror with a waterfall and a natural shadow garden with fern plants and moss. A sculpture of two Ginkgo leaves symbolizes the current transformation of the site where the past is meeting the future. The past is seen in the form of an ancient Zelkova Tree, around which new high-rise development will appear. The tree represents durability through time, it serves as a high light of the park.
