Elix is a hamlet in Zeist's Kerckebosch district. BPD is developing a residential environment here together with the future residents. As a participant, you decide on the development of the collective space and your own home. Elix's relationship with the forest is a key point in the plan. For example, the architecture of MIX Architectuur connects to the natural environment, circular development and construction with CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) are pursued, just as a high level of sustainability in living. Also, residents will share facilities.
The sustainable lifestyle is the plan's connector. There will be terraced houses, semi-detached houses and detached houses within the Elix neighbourhood. The dwellings are arranged around a collective space and have a stepped construction that creates roof terraces. The residents are invited to design the layout of the collective centre of the hamlet. Options include a long picnic table, a pergola with an outdoor kitchen and a neighbourhood shed where residents can share tools.
The landscape plan, developed by LOOSvanVLIET, will also promote collectivity among the residents in other ways. For example, there will be a vegetable and herb garden, natural wooden play elements and portable seating for everyone to use. The plants are indigenous. The houses are carefully placed around the existing trees to avoid cutting them down.
Everyday things can also be shared at Elix, such as dining together, shared childcare or tutoring, urban gardening, fitness, shopping and transport. Together, residents create a thriving, socially sustainable community. Elix provides the building blocks for everyday life for people of all ages, backgrounds and living situations.
