"Nature is the source of all true knowledge." - Leonardo da Vinci.
At Vlaardingenlaan in Amsterdam, we are embarking on a journey to create a true oasis in the middle of the city. In a world that's constantly evolving, our project seeks to harmonize urban living with the innate beauty and resilience of nature. One of the central features of the project is a meandering stream that gracefully winds its way through an inner garden. This stream is a source of life for aquatic plants and fauna. The presence of water creates a pleasant microclimate that invites inhabitants to find solace in the cool shadows of the trees. Our goal is to create a thriving ecosystem rich in native plants which provide shelter and food for local fauna.
The garden is enclosed from the south with a sound barrier. This temporary structure is designed as a playful wonderland, overgrown with blossoming climbing plants, accommodating bird nests. Pieces of the structure will endure, serving as delightful play objects for the younger members of the community.
Our design is not just about beauty; it's also about resilience to the effects of climate change. The cooling shadows of the trees, the presence of water, and the addition of greenery on the rooftops will mitigate heat stress. We're also working to prevent drought and flooding by creating rainwater buffers on the roofs and within the garden. This ensures that our oasis stands as a beacon of sustainability and adaptability in an ever-changing world.
We are immensely proud of this project, as it is a testament to the power of learning from nature and applying those lessons to urban development. In doing so, we are building a better place to live for generations to come.
