The ‘Groote Wielen’ is an expansion housing location in Rosmalen situated around a series of ponds. Across the central pond a new bridge is planned, with a car lane, a footpath and a two-way cycle tracks. The bridge design, the first in a family of bridges, consists of a slender in situ poured concrete deck with tapered edges. The deck with two relays spans eighty meters. For the deck and abutments, understated simplicity of the design is opted. The exception has been searched in the fence, which consists of steel strips at right angles to the axis of the bridge. This results in the elevation of a transparent base. By welding locally tabs on the steel strip a pattern is developed. Because it is the central bridge over the central pool of ‘Groote Wielen‘ inspiration is sought in the lines of dikes with 'wielen'. The principle is also applicable to the other bridges yet to be designed so that it is easy to make a family of bridges.
